Full of fear, the rabbit paddled and struggled, got his head up and took a breath, scrabbled his claws, against rough bricks under water and lost them again as he was dragged on. What was he going to do?! He needed to get to the shoreline. Scared and struggling, he tried grabbing onto many rocks and could not get his grip. Thankful, he found a branch and grabbed it, clenching it tighly. Slow and careful, he pulled himself on the branch and continued to walk across it. He walked across it and made it onto the river bank. Frightened and torn, the rabbit did not want to get into that situation again. He hopped along the grass, when all of the sudden he saw hunters. “Oh no!” he thought, today was not his day. He hopped faster and faster. Nervous and tense, he felt as if his paws could not hop his body far enough away from the predicament that he was in.

He reached, he sprung, and he dove for the edge of the stream, but could not get there. He got ever so close yet he never could make it. Tired and worn out, the rabbit decided to make one final attempt to get out of the water. The stream decreased its speed quickly, but the rabbit could not tell. He was just trying to stay afloat. Calmer than he should be, he went with the current and just tried regained his strength. The stream slowed down so much that the rabbit could escape, but he did not know where he was. Scared, He tried to recognize his surroundings, but the only thing he saw were the lush trees and tall, green grass.

Full of fear, the rabbit paddled and struggled, got his head up and took a breath, scrabbled his claws against rough bricks under water and lost them again as he was dragged on. His captor pushed onward through the dark, dank alley, paying no mind to the puddles or the rabbit’s squeals. The rabbit looked with fear upon the dark shadows making their way down the alley alongside him. Spying a large dark figure looming ahead of him, he struggled harder, but was successful only in making his captor tighten his grip. The two men exchanged a nod, and then the rabbit was tossed carelessly into a barrel. Echoing hollowly with his cries, the barrel shook and finally settled on its base. The rabbit could feel it being lifted and then set down on an unsteady surface. The men’s voices comforted him somehow, but they faded away slowly until all he could hear was the menacing silence that seemed to be slowly closing in on him.

Raging, the river tossed him around like a rag doll in a child’s hands. Every second the rabbit could, he tried to sneak in a breath of air. Scrambling for something to grab onto, the rabbit flailed among the debris in the water. He caught a break when he found a stick protruding out of the water in front of him. Desperately, he clung to the stick for his life. He saw an out cropping in the distance and let go of the stick to get to the shore where he would be safe. Dazed and confused, the rabbit maintained his course and reached the shore. The soft sand felt like silk on his paws. He knew the water would rise and he must get to higher ground. In the torrential down pour, he couldn’t hear himself while he ran, but knew he was leaving the river behind him as he ran up the hill.
